Automated Scaffolding Design for a Safer, More Sustainable, and Equitable Future Scaffolding is a critical component in many construction projects, but safety measures around its design and use have long been neglected. Industry data shows that 61% ofscaffolds in Sweden lack required strength calculations, and 54% are incorrectly constructed, posing significant risks to workers and the public. This problem is exacerbated by the construction industry’s time-consuming and costly design process, which small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often lack the resources to manage effectively.
Scaffcalc has developed an innovative digital tool that usesartificial intelligence (AI) and proprietary algorithms to automatically design and dimension scaffolding structures with just a click of a button. The tool, expected to revolutionize the design process, dramatically reduces the time and cost of calculations, from weeks to seconds and from thousands of Swedish kronor to a fraction of the price. By optimizing material use, it also reduces capital tied up in inventory and transportation needs, contributing to a more sustainable construction sector.
Connection to the Global Goals and Smart Built Environment Effect Logic 3.0 Scaffcalc’s project directly contributes to several of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By reducing accidents and ensuring proper calculations, the project supports SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. Additionally, the project’s digitization and automation efforts align with SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
Within the framework of Smart Built Environment’s "Effect Logic 3.0," the project contributes to several short term effect goals for 2026. By optimizing material use, reducing transportation needs, and improving productivity, the project helps decrease the construction industry’s environmental impact. It also promotes the use of AI, digitalizing and standardizing the scaffolding design process, thus enhancing the sector’s efficiency and industrial processes.
Promoting Equality in the Industry The scaffolding industry has traditionally been homogenous and technically challenging. Scaffcalc’s solution is designed to be user-friendly, lowering technical barriers and making the industry more accessible to people from diverse backgrounds and abilities. By automating the design process, the tool reduces the reliance on specialized knowledge, enabling smaller companies to work safely and competitively. This fosters a more equitable industry where more people can contribute.
In summary, Scaffcalc’s project aims to make the scaffolding industry safer, more sustainable, and more equitable through a groundbreaking digitalization of the design process.
